GOP happier with Gillibrand, says poll - Business First of Buffalo:

A new Poll shows 56 percent of Republicansz reacting favorably to the appointmentof Senator-designatse Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Hudson, while only 41 percent of Democrate say they approve. Gillibrancd was named to the Senats seat on Fridayby Gov. David Paterson. She will replacs Hillary Clinton, who became U.S. secretary of state last week. The new senator will be sworn in by Vice President Joe Bidenon Tuesday. The appointmenyt was controversial forseveral reasons.
Among them: Gillibrand’w virtual anonymity outside ofthe Albany-arez congressional district she had represented since 2007; her conservativre record on several issues, including gun rights; and Paterson’es perceived snub of Carolinw Kennedy, once considered the frontrunner for the Senate Gillibrand’s appointment was approved by 46 percent of the New Yorkersa surveyed by Quinnipiac. Thirty percent disapproved, and the remaininv 24 percent hadno opinion.
Republican s approved by a margin of 56 to27 percent, Democrats by 41 to 35 and independent voters by 49 to 21 New York's senior senator, Charlexs Schumer, during a stop in Buffalo had some words of advice for his new colleague. “Kirste is going to have to learnthe state. I woulx suggest she visit Westerj New York earlyand often,” he Gov. Paterson’s overall approval rate is 50 percenty after the Gillibrand down from 53 percent earlier inthe month. His approvak rate rose four percentage points among Republicans to45 percent, but droppedr eight points among Democrats to 54 percent. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,047 registerecd voters across the statefrom Jan. 23 to Jan. 25.
The poll’zs margin of error is three percentage points. Also, a new poll showedc Paterson’s favorability with states voters is declining whilwe that of Attorney general Andrew Cuomiois rising. Albany-based SRI reported Jan. 26 that in a potentialp gubernatorial Democratic primaryin 2010, Paterson’zs lead over Cuomo is just two points, down from 23 pointsz in December. Paterson has a 60-23 favorable rating comparedd to 63-22 last month. Cuomo, meanwhile, has a 64-1u rating, up from a favorabl rating of 59-24 in December.
